On Memorial Day

But Now, Especially ….

O beautiful for heroes prov’d
In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved,
And mercy more than life.America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness,
And ev’ry gain divine. 

 

The president released a statement today (available here) in which he said:

Today, all who wear the uniform of the United States carry with them the proud legacies of those who have made our Nation great, from the patriots who fought at Lexington and Concord to the troops who stormed the beaches at Normandy.  Ordinary men and women of extraordinary courage have, since our earliest days, answered the call of duty with valor and unwavering devotion.  From Gettysburg to Kandahar, America’s sons and daughters have served with honor and distinction, securing our liberties and laying a foundation for lasting peace.

Years ago, at the prompting of school children, President Clinton called for a Moment of Remembrance at 3 pm on Memorial Day and asked that people take a minute to remember what and who we are and how and why our debt of gratitude is immeasurable. It was suggested that Taps be played during that time of reflection:
